Alpine Classic Jan 2012

15 min video and stills highlights. With the Gentlemen Wheelers as we bike Falls Creek, Mt Buffalo and Tawonga Gap in the Victorian Alps for the Audax Alpine Classic in January 2012. Almost 4000m of altitude gain over 200km with afternoon temps approaching 40deg on Mt Buffalo. My most challenging but most rewarding road ride. Over 1000 riders participated in this event which incorporated the ACE (Alpine Classic Extreme 250km - to Mt Hotham and across Dinner Plain to Omeo and back through Falls Creek). David Hislop undertook this challenge and averaged 25kph! Our contingent of Wheelers (total of 10 started the 200km course and 8 made the full distance) supporting each other along the way and made the ride and the weekend more enjoyable. The first half of the course was under perfect weather conditions, allowing riders to make good progress up the Falls Creek climb and back across Tawonga. The ascent of Mt Buffalo proved the most difficult section as the afternoon sun pushed the temps up towards 40deg. There was no greater relief I have known then to arrive at the Gap atop Buffalo and roll into Dingo Dell for a refreshing drink and feast of oranges and creamed rice! All in all a great day out, followed by a dip in the river and a beer at the Bright Brewery.Well done to all our riders and all who participated in this wonderful biking challenge. Definite "must do" for bikers who enjoy long distance and climbing (and descending) courses. Garmin Connect link http://connect.garmin.com/activity/145851586
