The Stage 26
started perfectly with a bright morning and clear skies. There were two climbs
scheduled for the day Col de Vars and the Col d’Ízoard. These are two passes
which are quite close together with the town of Guillestre separating them. The
climb to Col de Vars was steady at the start as we left camp then titled up to
10-12 % in various sections. A “medium” sized pass with a distance of 25kms;
the first 10 of which is only 3-4%. Then the descent which was fabulous. Bright
sunlight and a beautiful road surface made it ideal for viewing all the scenery
of the valley surrounding. Through the town of Vars, which is really a ski
resort and on to Guillestre.
Along the Ubaye River on the way to Col d’Izoard,
we saw rafters and canoe paddlers shooting the rapids. Seems a popular spot for
this activity. Lunch was alongside the river and just on the start of the
climb. Col d’Izoard is approx. 2400m high so it was the highest point of the
day.
After coke and ice cream it was another great descent into the large town
of Briancon where we will have a rest day tomorrow. Garmin link here
